Middle School World Language Curriculum

In the Chelmsford Public Schools, students begin studying either French or Spanish in 7th grade. They select a language via a Google survey sent out at the end of their 6th grade year. Middle school World Language classes occur daily in 7th and 8th grades. Students begin at the Novice level and are expected to reach a level of Novice Mid or Novice High by the end of their 8th grade year. Lessons are designed with a focus on communication and speaking in the target language.

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) approved new state standards for World Languages in 2021. Our curriculum is regularly being updated and reviewed to meet these standards. Please see the information below regarding our proficiency-based curriculum.

World Language is a core subject at Chelmsford High School. It is important to choose a language in Middle School that you are interested in and may want to continue for several years! Students at Chelmsford High School are required to complete two years of the same language at CHS. Many colleges and universities expect students to complete three or four years of study of the same world language in high school.
We are excited to have you start on the path to language learning at McCarthy Middle School! At McCarthy Middle School, you may choose either French or Spanish.
