Chelmsford High School Announces October 2022 Students of the Month

CHELMSFORD, MA (Oct. 21, 2022) – Six seniors were recently honored as Chelmsford High School named its Lions Pride/Rotary Student of the Month recipients for the month of October, announced CHS Principal Stephen Murray.

Seniors Hope Hebert and Joseph Mitri were named from the Emerson House while Kaitlyn Kaminuma and Remoré Serra were honored from the Hawthorne House, and Jared Guerin and Clara Wong from the Whittier House.

Sponsored by the Chelmsford Rotary Club for more than 30 years, the Student of the Month program recognizes outstanding students from each of CHS’s three academic houses – Emerson House, Hawthorne House, and Whittier House – for their achievements in and out of the classroom.

Hope Hebert

A member of four national honor societies – including the English, French, Science and National Honor Society – Ms. Hebert has thrived with a rigorous courseload that includes AP Literature and Composition, AP Biology, AP Psychology, and Honors Biotechnology, among others.

A member of the CHS Theatre Guild, Ms. Hebert has held roles such as assistant student producer, head of props and chair of makeup. She is also the president and co-founder of the Women in STEM Club, and a member of the CHS Mentors, American Sign Language (ASL) Club and Leaders in Motion Everywhere (LIME).

Outside of CHS, Ms. Hebert has volunteered her time with the Chelmsford Public Library as well as the Town of Chelmsford Recycling Zero Waste Day.

Undecided on a college, Ms. Hebert plans to major in psychology. She is the daughter of Dennis and Betsy Hebert.

Joseph Mitri

An exemplary student-athlete, Mr. Mitri will have completed six AP courses and 15 honors classes by graduation of 2023. Currently, he is enrolled in AP Literature and Composition, AP Calculus, AP Psychology, AP Biology and Honors Anatomy and Physiology.

Mr. Mitri has earned induction into three national honor societies: the NHS, World Language and English, the latter for which he serves as a board member. A captain and four-year linebacker on the CHS football team, he has helped the Lions to a 5-1 clip and the No. 6 spot in the latest MIAA Division 2 Poll entering Friday’s home clash against Westford.

Also a standout wrestler, he has received the CHS Scholar Athlete Award in both sports as a junior. Mr. Mitri is also a member of CHS Mentors and was chosen to serve on the Dean’s Council.

Perhaps Mr. Mitri’s most impressive trait is how he survived Hodgkins lymphoma his freshman year, during which he underwent six months of chemotherapy treatments yet never missed school or practice. He has also overcome a broken finger and three broken bones in his hand during his sophomore and junior seasons.

Though yet to decide on a college, Mr. Mitri plans to become an orthodontist and open his own practice. He is the son of Antoine and Nathalie Mitri.

Kaitlyn Kaminuma

Ms. Kaminuma is equally a highly accomplished musician, student, and leader. She is currently enrolled in five AP courses – Environmental Science, Spanish, Calculus, English Literature and Psychology – as well as Honors Chamber Orchestra and Reality Check and has earned High Honors each term. She is also a member of four honor societies including the NHS, English, Spanish and Tri-M Music Honor Society.

In June, Ms. Kaminuma was among 14 recipients of the Junior College Book Awards, presented to exceptional juniors who exemplify leadership, scholarship and loyalty to CHS. She was presented “The Road From Coorain” (by author Jill Ker Conway) from Smith College.

Musically, Ms. Kaminuma is currently the president of the CHS Symphony Orchestra, of which she has been a four-year member. She is also active in the pit orchestra for CHS Theatre Guild productions. Outside of CHS, she has been selected to the All-State Ensemble by the Massachusetts Music Educators Association (MMEA) and is currently the co-concertmaster and principal second violinist for the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra.

As a sophomore, Ms. Kaminuma was selected to the Carnegie Hall National Youth Orchestra 2, of which she remains a member. She was the only musician from Massachusetts to be chosen.

Ms. Kaminuma’s campus involvement spreads further than music, however. She is the co-president of the Mindful Matters Club and a member both Freshman Mentors and LIME. Off campus, she is a member of Continuo, a student-run orchestra in Greater Boston which offers student musicians opportunities and mentorship.

Ms. Kaminuma plans to study public health and communications sciences and disorders with a minor in music. She is the daughter of Albert and Mami Kaminuma.

Remoré Serra

An honor roll student in each of her terms at CHS, Ms. Serra is as accomplished an athlete as she is academically. A member of the NHS, Spanish and English national honor societies, she is currently enrolled in courses such as AP Psychology, Honors Anatomy and Physiology, Calculus and Accounting, among others.

A four-year starter in three varsity sports, Ms. Serra is a two-time Merrimack Valley Conference and New England Region all-star in field hockey and has led the Lions, ranked No. 6 in the latest MIAA Division 2 poll, to a 9-3 record. She is an all-scholastic honoree by The Sun, The Boston Globe and Boston Herald.

Ms. Serra is also a member of the Billerica/Chelmsford girls ice hockey team and a lacrosse standout.

Off the field, Ms. Serra serves on the executive board of the Freshman Mentors program and is also involved in the Resiliency program. She has volunteered with causes such as the Chelmsford Food Pantry and Table of Plenty; youth field hockey and ice hockey; and the annual John Carson Road Race.

Ms. Serra will attend the University of Massachusetts where she will major in Public Health and continue her field hockey career. She is the daughter of Jerry and Angela Serra.

Jared Guerin

A High Honor Roll student in each of his semesters at CHS, Mr. Guerin is a member of the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society and World Language Honor Society. His coursework this semester includes AP Government and Politics, AP Literature and Composition, Honors Art, and Honors International Relations, among others.

Mr. Guerin is omnipresent among CHS clubs and activities, including the Art Club, for which he serves as the co-president; and CHS Mentors, for which he is an executive board member. He is also a member of LIME and the Asian Student Organization, and has participated in the CHS Leadership Conference.

An online business owner since 2017, Mr. Guerin also volunteers with Chelmsford Youth Baseball.

Though yet to declare his college plans, he plans to major in American studies and minor in art. He is the son of Mark and Rena Guerin.

Clara Wong

An exemplary student inducted into three honor societies – NHS, English and World Languages – Ms. Wong has been a High Honor Roll student all four years at CHS. She is currently taking three AP classes – AP Environmental Science, AP Psychology and AP Calculus – along with Honors Anatomy and Physiology, among others.

Like Ms. Kaminuma, Ms. Wong was among the recipients of the Junior College Book Awards, accepting “A Short History of Boston,” by Dr. Robert Allison, from Suffolk University.

Ms. Wong is an active member of many clubs and causes at CHS. She is the co-president of the Art Club and the Mindfulness Matters Club, and gives her time to Freshmen Mentors, LIME, and the Asian Student Organization. Outside of campus, she has earned five volunteer service awards with the Tzu Chi Foundation, an international humanitarian organization. She also worked at Kumon Math and Reading Center in Lowell.

Though yet to decide on a college, Ms. Wong plans to study biology or animal science. She is the daughter of Huifang Lu.
