An Integrated Approach to Literacy in Grades 1-4

K-4 Literacy instruction at CPS focuses on developing learners who are adept at reading, writing, oral language and critiquing multiple texts while recognizing the social as well as cognitive aspects of literacy learning. The Fountas & Pinnell Classroom reading program (K-4) and Fundations phonics program (K-3) supports our literacy goals.

Fountas & Pinnell Classroom:

Fountas & Pinnell Classroom™ is a cohesive, multi-text approach to literacy instruction for all students in grades PreK–6. The System is designed to support whole-group, small-group and independent learning opportunities including: interactive read-aloud, reading minilessons, shared reading, phonics/spelling/word study lessons, guided reading, book clubs, and independent reading collections.  Fountas & Pinnell Classroom™ is rich with authentic texts, lessons or conferring cards, minilessons and professional tools & learning for a systematic, transformative approach to literacy instruction.

Fundations Phonics Program:

Fundations makes learning to read fun while laying the groundwork for life-long literacy. Students in grades K-3 receive a systematic program in critical foundational skills, emphasizing:
