Senior Lyla El-Gamel named Best Supporting Actress, Avery Marr named for Chorus; CHS Cited for Best Dance Ensemble, Sound
CHELMSFORD, MA (June 29, 2022) – Senior Lyla El-Gamel was named Best Supporting Actress as Chelmsford High School took home four honors at the 16th Annual Theater at the Mount (TAMY) Awards, announced at the 2021-22 TAMY Awards Gala Sunday, June 12 at Mount Wachusett Community College.
The CHS Theatre Guild earned 17 TAMY nominations, including 10 nominations in 11 ensemble categories and seven in eight individual categories. The nominations were based on the Guild’s production of Pippin, which ran from Nov. 18-20 at the Carl J. Rondina Performing Arts Center.
Ms. El-Gamel was one of two CHS individuals to receive honors as her performance of Catherine, the quirky widow and admirer of Pippin, was judged to be tops in a field of nine actresses.
“I was a little bit surprised,” said Ms. El-Gamel, who will study music therapy at Temple University’s Boyer College of Music and Dance. “I didn’t expect to receive it because I looked at the list (of nominees) and there were so many. I was honored and surprised. I hadn’t received recognition for being an individual actor on stage before, so it was really cool.
“We view awards as a whole production,” she added. “It’s special to me because I love to sing and I love to dance.”
When the nominations were announced May 16, senior Avery Marr was among 19 students representing 16 schools to receive Not Your Average Chorus Member honors. Ms. Marr was also the Captain of the CHS’s dance ensemble which won Best Dance Ensemble in the Large School Division.
CHS’s production of Pippin also received Technical Excellence for Sound in the large school division.
Pippin was the second live production at CHS since the Covid-19 outbreak in March of 2020, and first live production without attendance limits. Last May 20, 21 and 22, members of the CHS Theatre Guild performed two short original works, The King is Dead and The Last Person on Earth, with attendance limited to 100.
