Chelmsford Field Hockey Program Makes Food Donation to Chelmsford Food Pantry

CHELMSFORD, MA (Nov. 6, 2020) – With the COVID-19 pandemic increasing the demand on local food pantries nationwide, the Chelmsford field hockey program is stepping forward.

With the holidays merely weeks away, the CHS field hockey teams – varsity and junior varsity squads A and B – did their part to ease the demand as all 39 players donated food and groceries to the Chelmsford Food Pantry Thursday.

“This was all team-promoted,” said second-year head coach Susan D’Agostino. “A couple of our kids talked about the needs of the pantry. They see the kids who are benefitting from the student lunch program (free for the academic year 2020-21). Our captains (senior Morgan Wright and juniors Maddie Priestly and Sarah Latham) discussed it as a group and all 39 players brought donations.”

Thursday’s contribution is consistent with the team’s tradition of service to the community and Chelmsford Public Schools.

Bob LaPorte, a volunteer at the Pantry, emphasized the growing demand for food donations, particularly in the current climate. “It’s really wonderful that the team made this donation to the pantry,” he said. “We’re seeing more than 1,000 people who need food every month. Since the summer, our numbers have increased by 10 percent month over month. We expect that trend to continue.

“But it’s remarkable how generous people really are,” he added.
