Special Education Information

It is the responsibility of the Chelmsford Public Schools to identify any child who is a resident of Chelmsford, who may have a disability, regardless of the severity of the disability.  It is also the responsibility of the Chelmsford Public Schools to evaluate those students to determine if they are eligible for special education or related services under IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) or 603 CMR 28 (Massachusetts Special Education Regulations).

Early Childhood / Preschool:

The Chelmsford Public School District is committed to identifying children before their third birthday in order to provide early intervention services for three and four year-olds. If you have questions or concerns regarding your child’s development and would like to have him or her screened, please call Mr. Russell Hoyt, Preschool Coordinator at the CHIPS (Chelmsford Integrated Preschool) for an appointment at (978)-251-5188 or Amy Reese, Director of Student Support Services at (978)-251-5100 ext. 6920 for more information.

Private School—School Age:

If your child attends a private school and you suspect that your child, at any age, may need an evaluation to determine eligibility for special education services, you may request  an evaluation, at no cost.  Please contact the Chelmsford Public Schools Student Services Office at (978)-341-5563 for information about referring your child for an evaluation.

 School Age—Chelmsford Public School Student:

If your child (grades K-12) attends the Chelmsford Public Schools and you suspect he/she may need an evaluation to determine eligibility for special education services, please contact the Principal at your child’s school for information about the referral process.
