Chelmsford High School National English Honor Society Induction 2021

CHS National English Honor Society Inducts 64 Members

Despite Covid-19 restrictions, NEHS staged three successful projects in 2020-21

CHELMSFORD, MA (June 15, 2021) – The Chelmsford High School John F. Kennedy chapter of the National English Honor Society inducted 64 new members on Thursday, June 3, in a ceremony held at the Carl J. Rondina Performing Arts Center.

The Chelmsford High School NEHS consists of students who have completed a minimum two years of English courses prior to induction and have achieved and maintained good standing not just in English curriculum, but in all courses.

The mission of the NEHS is to use the love of words and language in service to peers, school and community; to advance the study of all areas of English; and to foster a spirit of fellowship among students excelling in all facets of the English Language Arts.

In the 2020-21 academic year, the Chelmsford JFK chapter did exactly that.

Throughout the year, members of the NEHS maintained correspondence with fourth-graders from both the Center and Harrington elementary schools through its Pen Pal Project. “The kids’ responses were tremendous,” said Ian Van Blarcom, co-advisor of the NEHS with Matt Bartos. “It’s something we’re going to try to keep going. We’d like to extend it to all the elementary schools.”

The NEHS also co-sponsored the Curriculum Diversification Project with CHS senior and NEHA member Jenna Ward, who used the project to achieve the Gold Award, the highest honor a member of the Girl Scouts of America can attain. The Curriculum Diversification Project created a resource library for alternative literature. “We created a good-sized library,” said Mr. Van Blarcom. “I don’t see any reason why it won’t remain and I expect it will be bolstered by more titles as they become available.”

Additionally, the NEHS held Book Lovers Trivia Night, an English-themed trivia competition held virtually, consisting of English and contemporary literature. Each team’s entry fees and proceeds benefitted the charity of the winning team’s choice World Central Kitchen in New York, N.Y.

The 2021 induction class – made up of all juniors – included:
